The Royal Swedish Ballet School

Sweden's most distinguished school for aspiring professional dancers

Dance in Sweden has gone through an expansive development in recent years. The art demands increasingly skilled professionals and it is the Royal Swedish Ballet School´s objective to educate dance artists whose knowledge and talent may carry this development further. The organisation exists both as Junior School and Upper Secondary School.

To become a professional dancer the requirements are, besides good physical possibilities, a feeling for movement, musicality and stage presence, a sound education, dedicated work and love of dance.

The Royal Swedish Ballet School is proud to offer an education where the artistic and physical training go hand in hand to reach the professional standard and demands of today's dance scene. Both Junior School and Upper Secondary School are national educations and students are also accepted from the Scandinavian countries. The Dance education at the Royal Swedish Ballet School is lead by combined artistic and educational leadership.

Junior School

The dance education in the Junior School is a preparation for a professional education and is located in Stockholm as well as in Gothenburg and Piteå. The purpose of the preparatory dance education in Junior School is that the pupils shall be technically and artistically ready to be accepted for and follow the Upper Secondary School´s professional course for dancers. The preparatory dance education consists of classical ballet, which is the main part of the education, character, contemporary and jazz as well as improvisation and acrobatics. The education is suitable for both boys and girls. From the 7th class training takes part on Saturdays also.

Upper Secondary School

The Royal Swedish Ballet School´s aim is to educate professional dancers in the different styles of dance, such as classical ballet and contemporary dance. Within the Upper Secondary School´s framework the specially developed course for professional dancers provides a complete professional education in dance combined with the essential theoretical subjects. Completion of the Upper Secondary School education course gives the necessary competence to apply for university.

The education accepts students from all of Sweden and Scandinavia. The dance education focuses on two courses, classical ballet and contemporary dance. The objective of the education is that after completion of courses students have obtained sufficient knowledge, and a proficient dance technique, to be able to enter the dance profession. The educations goal is also that the students shall understand the importance of the daily training and to take responsability for their own work. Entrance to the Upper Secondary School is held by audition.
